Medusa sees her own image and turns to stone. Once a beautiful maiden she was transformed into a serpent headed monster by Athena.
The snakes, which made Medusa hideous, turned to gold when she saw her own image.
The eyes were made to look directly at the viewer standing before her implying we are the mirror or perhaps the beast. We all have a feature we feel that is not as beautiful as the rest of us. That feature is part of what makes our identity and in reality a beautiful part of us worthy of gold.
